Seven Reasons Hockey Is Better Than Your Sport

In honor of tonight’s Game 7 match-up in the Stanley Cup Finals, here are seven reasons that hockey is better than any other sport (in no particular order):

1) The top hockey trophy has its own handler
That’s so awesome, it doesn’t need an explanation.

2) The handshake lines
At the conclusion of every playoff series, the opposing teams line up at center ice, Little League-style, for the handshake line. I can’t recall hearing of any player or coach every skipping out on this. It’s a feel-good moment every time, and a great example for the kids watching.

3) Playoff beards
Not that I’m a huge fan of facial hair, but I do love this tradition. From the minors to the majors, at playoff time, the facial hair comes out. What other sport has a wonky tradition like this, one that spans all levels of professional play?

4) Goalie masks
I love that goalies are allowed to express their personalities on their masks. What other sport allows one position this type of freedom of expression? I’m so glad the NHL has allowed this to continue.

5) Hockey fans have better taunts
An example: You’re not a goalie, you’re a vacuum; you’re not a vacuum, you’re a black hole; you’re not a black hole…YOU JUST SUCK, YOU JUST SUCK, YOU JUST SUCK! (A Cleveland-area reporter mistakenly attributed this to fans of our minor league team a few years ago. Sorry to tell ya – it’s been around waaaaaay longer than that.)

6) The Zamboni
Also so awesome it does not need an explanation.

7) The trophy is awarded to the team captain, not the owner
I get it; the owners are the dudes with the moola. But in that moment of triumph, I want to see the guys who gave their blood, sweat, tears and maybe teeth get their hands on the trophy first. I just don’t get why other sports don’t do this. Don’t you think it’s a downer at the end of the Superbowl to see some guy in a suit get handed the trophy and babble out some meaningless blather?

I could go on, but it’s almost time for the puck to drop! Best of luck to the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks this evening!

Agree? Disagree? Let’s hear it in the comments.
